Season for Nonviolence: Day 58

Day 58: March 28

The thought for today is CITIZENSHIP.

The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. – Bahá’u’lláh

Looking at photos of the earth taken from space, one sees only land and water; lights from cities may be visible. There is something conspicuously absent from the photographs: the borders that we have placed around our states and nations to separate us from one another. Many wars have been fought over theses man-made boundaries.

As the world population continues to grow and resources dwindle, it is imperative that we begin thinking globally, realizing our interdependence, and considering how we are living is affecting the rest of humanity. Any conflicts to come will not be wars over boundaries and nationalistic pride, but over clean water and food supplies. We must set our intention together to act now to help our brothers and sisters in need to prevent the seeds of future violence from taking root.

There is a movement growing in the United States to create a U.S. Department of Peace. For the second year in a row, this idea was voted by the American public as one of the “Top Ten Ideas for Change in America” at Change.org. The bill is HR808 and currently has 71 co-sponsors from 27 states. The purpose of this measure, according to the Peace Alliance, is to “augment our current problem-solving options, providing practical, nonviolent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict.”

Peace on Earth in our lifetime. The choice is ours.

Get involved. Do something today. Join the Peace Alliance. Educate yourself. Learn to become a peacemaker. Within the New Thought movement, the Centers for Spiritual Living have created a Global Heart team and Unity, as part of its commitment to Spiritual Social Action, has created an International EarthCare Team and a Peace Team. Contact one of them today and find out how you can help. Write or call your representative in Congress and ask him or her to co-sponsor HR808 if he or she hasn’t already done so and express your thanks if he or she already has. The time for Peace is now.

About Rev. Rebecca

After 30 years of trying to avoid God, I finally gave up playing Jonah and answered Love's call to service by becoming an ordained New Thought minister. Since that day in 2007, I've counseled a lot of people, performed some weddings, been a publiic speaker, and done some non-profit board work. Opportunities for service are presenting themselves in new ways for the coming year and I look forward to more of Love unfolding in my life.
