Season for Nonviolence: Day 22

Day 22: February 20

The thought for today is MISSION.

When you discover your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it. – W. Clement Stone

Gandhi’s mission was to be nonviolent in his thoughts, words, and actions and reveal Peace as he worked for civil rights and independence for his people. Dr. King’s mission was to follow Gandhi’s example as he promoted civil rights for people of color here in the United States.  Justice for farm workers was the life mission of Cesar Chavez. What do you stand for? Do you know what your life’s mission is?

As an exercise in of one of my seminary classes, I had to develop a questionnaire and help at least 6 other people discover their mission. I also had to develop both personal and professional mission statements for myself. This has helped me maintain focus so that I stay on course and don’t get sidetracked by activities that would pull me off course. As I have given it more thought and meditation over the past few years, I’ve refined my mission statement and combined my personal and professional mission into one concise statement: To know, serve, and reveal the Sacred Presence.

In all I do, whether it’s work-related or personal activity, I ask myself if my tasks are helping me to become more attuned to the One Presence. Is what I’m doing of service to the Highest Good of all? Am I revealing God to others through my thoughts, words, and even the smallest of actions?

There are many terrific books out there to help you discern your mission. I highly suggest Laurie Beth Jones‘ book The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement for Work and for Life and Barbara Sher’s I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What it Was.

What do you stand for? Do you really stand for Peace and nonviolence? What does it mean to ‘stand for Peace and nonviolence?’ How do or can you demonstrate that? How does that fit within the context of the rest of your life? How does it fit into your overall personal and professional mission?

Today I will contemplate what I stand for in my life. I will consider ways that I can take action that demonstrate my beliefs. I will develop a personal mission statement. I will memorize it and so make it part of my life that I will be able to share it with others instantly.

About Rev. Rebecca

After 30 years of trying to avoid God, I finally gave up playing Jonah and answered Love's call to service by becoming an ordained New Thought minister. Since that day in 2007, I've counseled a lot of people, performed some weddings, been a publiic speaker, and done some non-profit board work. Opportunities for service are presenting themselves in new ways for the coming year and I look forward to more of Love unfolding in my life.
