Day 14: February 12
The thought for today is HUMILITY.
To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them. ~ Charles de Montesquieu
“Then an argument broke out among (the disciples) about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. He said to them, “…let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: the one seated at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at the table? Yet, I am among you as one who serves.” ~ Luke 22
You don’t hear people talk very often (if at all) about humility. It seems like we either have a lot of attitude or we feel awful about ourselves. You don’t even hear it talked about in churches. I think a lot of people don’t understand what it means to be humble. Many have the idea that it means they have to act lowly or allow others to walk all over them. They may think it means that they have to feel inferior to others. None of this is true.
Being humble means thinking rightly about yourself. Ralph W. Sockman said, “Be humble, for the worst thing in the world is of the same stuff as you; be confident, for the stars are of the same stuff as you.” It’s all God. There is nothing about you that makes you any more or less special than anyone else. You have no right or reason to behave with arrogance and pride and treat anyone else as inferior to you, nor should you treat others as superior. To treat yourself or others as inferior is disrespectful and an act of violence.
Imagine what would happen if we let go of status. How much energy do we put into trying to make ourselves look important? How often do we get defensive with others about our lives, our dreams, our choices, our ideas? A Oneness consciousness reveals that there is no one to defend against, no one over whom we have standing or position. If we do not see ourselves and others rightly, then we do not allow the Presence of Love nor will we experience Peace.
When you humble yourself, you move ego out of the way and allow room for your individual consciousness to connect with Divine Mind. If you do not have an openness and humility in consciousness, you cannot enter the kingdom within you. A prideful and arrogant spirit cannot see God; it only sees its own ego’s reflection. This is what Jesus meant when he said we must humble ourselves like children to enter the kingdom.
Recognizing the Truth of Who We Are allows me the insight that we only need Be. We are all Children of the Divine, brothers and sisters; we come from the same Love and live, move and have our Being in the same Sacred Presence. I let go of judgment and defensive behavior, as I see clearly that there is no separation between us; we are truly One Presence. I let go of any feelings of inferiority or superiority, seeing that we are all heirs to the Kingdom. I see myself and others clearly and walk my journey with humility and respect in the Spirit of Peace.
