Season for Nonviolence: Day 6

Day 6: February 4

The thought for today is SIMPLICITY.

Hans Hofmann said that to simplify is to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. This begs the question: what is necessary and what is unnecessary in your life? What is meaningful to you? What is a distraction or a time-killer? I always thought that ‘killing time’ was a strange phrase; as though we have so much of it to waste.

What about you? Your dreams, goals, hopes, and aspirations? Are they important? What about the physical state of your body? What about your mental faculties or your emotional well-being? How important are they? Are your family and friends important? Your neighborhood? The greater community in which you live? What about your relationship with the One Who makes it all possible? What matters most to you and is it reflected in the way you live?

What is unnecessary in your life that is distracting you? Television? The internet? Other less meaningful activities? What about fear? Unforgiveness? Or perhaps the pursuit of yet more material possessions? Maybe it’s just the physical clutter in your home environment.

What is keeping you from your Good? What can you let go of to simplify your life so that you can direct your time and energy to those things you say you value?

Remember: as within, so without. Clutter in our external experience is an indication of spiritual clutter inside us. It’s not easy to find Peace when we’re living in a mental and emotional mess. When we learn to let go of these distractions, become still, and see the present moment as the greatest gift of all, we will begin to open the way for Peace in our lives.

I will take an honest look at what I devote time and energy to in my life, whether possessions, activities, or even unhealthy relationships, and consider what is keeping me from my Highest Good. I let go of the physical and emotional clutter and I pledge to find ways to simplify the way I live, giving consideration to how my choices affect my world. I will give away things I no longer need and recycle as much as I am able of that which is trash. I let go now of those meaningless activities and emotional barriers that do not serve me, my family, or my community. As I empty my life of these things, it opens my being to be filled by the Spirit of Peace and clears the way for the experience of that which is truly meaningful.

About Rev. Rebecca

After 30 years of trying to avoid God, I finally gave up playing Jonah and answered Love's call to service by becoming an ordained New Thought minister. Since that day in 2007, I've counseled a lot of people, performed some weddings, been a publiic speaker, and done some non-profit board work. Opportunities for service are presenting themselves in new ways for the coming year and I look forward to more of Love unfolding in my life.
